Our Athletic Saint:

Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati

“Man of the Beatitudes”

Pier Giorgio Frassati found joy in all of the good and honorable things of life.  While his parents were rich and did not believe in God, Pier Giorgio made the decision to live his life for Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church.  He was a young man, and he died of polio at the age of only 24.

What is so amazing about this saint is that because of his great love for God, he had a strong sense of the joy of life and loved to joke around and have fun.  His friends say he was always playing practical jokes and having a good time and especially loved to be outdoors skiing and hiking.  He is the patron saint of our athletics because he loved sports.  Not only did he play sports in a holy way, but he was also really good at them.

What we learn about Pier Giorgio from his friends and family is that, in one word, Pier Giorgio Frassati was totally “cool.”  His love for Jesus did not make him wimpy, or “nerdy,” or boring.  Instead, Pier Giorgio himself says that his relationship with Jesus was the reason he was always having so much fun and bringing such happiness to his friends.

He is an example to us because he shows us that holiness doesn’t lead away from fun, laughter, and an exciting life, but instead, loving God leads us into the very heart of these things.  Let us take Pier Giorgio as our companion in our sports so he can show us how to truly have fun in what we are doing.
